ADVOCACY

Barristers from Guildhall Chambers appear predominately in Southern England and along the South Coast but representation can be arranged at any court or tribunal in England and Wales. Negotiations on your behalf can also be undertaken to attempt settlement before, and during, a trial.

DRAFTING SERVICES

A barrister may draft documents, statements, applications etc. to be used within proceedings and give guidance on what documents may be required and how to go about lodging these with the court and your opponent. In general terms documents sent to court are filed and those sent to opponents are served.

ARBITRATION

Arbitration, a form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), is a technique for the resolution of disputes outside the courts.  The parties to a dispute in arbitration agree to be bound by the arbitration decision.  A third party reviews the evidence in the case and imposes a decision that is legally binding on both sides and enforceable in the courts.  Arbitration is often faster than litigation in court.

ADVICE

A barrister will advise on your rights or legal position. In many instances receiving such advice at an initial conference (a meeting with a barrister) will help to clarify the situation enabling you to move the matter forward by yourself.  It may also help to bring about an early resolution to the issue.

PUBLIC ACCESS SCHEME

Anyone can now go directly to a barrister without having to involve anyone else e.g. a solicitor.  Barristers can advise you on your legal status or rights.  They can draft and send documents for you and can represent you in court, tribunals or mediations.  Barristers can also negotiate on your behalf and can attend hearings when appropriate.

MEDIATION

Family mediation is where an independent, professionally trained mediator, helps you and your ex to work out an agreement about issues such as arrangements for children, maintenance payments and finances such as what to do with your house, savings, pension and debts.  The mediator will help you find a solution which works for you both.  Most people who start mediation will reach an agreement without having to go to court.
